LOOKING BACK!!!
This is a post by Guest Author JATIN SHARMA, Sharing his Experiences of Semester - 3, Some parts of the article has been censored keeping in mind that it is a public post by now.
Yet another semester comes to an end. Our (B.F.TECH 2009-2013) clocks work in accordance with the semester rather than the year. Every semester is a new beginning. And every end brings to close the fun, camaraderie, and happiness we share. The end also, thankfully, brings an end to the endless assignments, submission dates, jury, and the jealous irritation that comes with the constant need to score more than the other person. The 8th of December saw yet another semester finish. Many things changed this semester and inevitably some did not.
THINGS THAT CHANGED
MASS BUNK: The most telling feature of this semester was that we had our first mass bunk. It required a certain bit of persuasion but it was expected. Unending assignments and classes finally took its toll on the batch and we managed to pull it off. We were finally following the footsteps of our seniors. Unfortunately the high of finally breaking a rule and getting away with it wasn’t a reward big enough for our HARDWORKING batch and the coup was never again repeated.
VALENTINE SEMESTER: I would like to call it the valentine semester simply because it involves so many people moving toward relationships. The biggest change is that our beloved PAVAN POWAR finally found his dream girl. You cannot but appreciate the commitment of the man. He was subjected to humiliation and jokes were cracked on him. (I admit I was a part of it but my happiness for both of you is genuine). But after swimming through a plethora of options he zeroed down on a girl. We do wish both of you best of luck.
His commitment rubbed on his roommates and his mentoring has yielded brilliant results. All three of them are beautifully placed. One of them is bigger player than PAVAN himself. One has more options than the number of subjects we have. And the last one turns out to be the dark horse who will do his mentor proud.
BOY got HIS girl.
The ending of the CUPID semester was fantastic. The most imaginative fellow could not have written the script better. Had I not been so involved with my assignments it would have knocked my socks off. And it would be safe to say PICTURE ABHI BAKI HAI MERE DOST.
REALLY HIGH CLASS: Move over cigarettes and beer, wine and whiskey…..the newest and the most happening place was U**A. D**U had become a necessity on weekends and visits to U**A became frequent.
Yaar marks kam aaye…..chal u**a chalte hain…..bimaar hun yaar ….chal d**u pee le……neend nahi aa rahi yaar…..chal bhand hote hain.
Getting high was the new mantra. There were some new entrants in the bhand gang. XXXXXXXX XXXXX made an inspiring debut and his dialogue, “MAIN BHAND NAHI HUN” will always be etched in our minds.
PRIYA GAUTAM: Priya GAUTAM changed.
THE THINGS THAT DID NOT CHANGE
Prateek Agarwal remains the topper. (MERA NUMBER KAB AAYEGA.)
Every student still has to be on his/her toes while talking to Kakar because without a warning she might spring up a question in a style that is invariably hers “KYA MAIN MOTA LAG RAHA HUN?” God bless the soul of the person who says yes. Her ‘barrage of questions’ style hasn’t and (I hope) will never change.
Our commitment to come 15 minutes late to every class hasn’t changed.
All of us still drink water from my bottle. (Absolutely no hard feelings you can continue to do that. Waise bhi mere kehne ka kuch khass farak nahi padta)
Each one of us will always say “mujhe kam marks ka koi farak nahi padta...nift ka marking system bekaar hain....in ko marks dena nahi aata“but will be over the moon when we get good marks.
There are so many more things to write but I know that none of us are in the habit of reading so much in one go. But I hope you do and hope that you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Finally I would like to say that it has been an absolute pleasure to be a part of this class and you guys make the college happening and it is only because of you that I wish to return. I hope our next semester is better than the previous ones and i hope THE NEW YEAR FUL FILS ALL YOUR WISHES. And remember YOU ARE HERE TO LEARN!!

Online Shopping and its Future in context of Garment Retailing.
The world is moving at a fast pace, people are more connected to each other thanks to the revolution in the communication world.
The shopping habits are changing and more people are willing to pay for a product online than the number of people a decade ago.
This change in human spending behaviour is happening globally and is going to disrupt the existing business model of retailing sooner or later but this change is certain.
Different clothing brands are offering option of online shopping from their well designed portals and websites.
Retail chains are collecting vast amonut of data about the customers through different loyalty, membership and discount programs. A stiff competition is going on between the stores to collect larger amount of customer data in their database.
But there is a lack of a strong mechanism to use this data for the further enhancement of shopping experiences and increasing the sales and brand value of the store.
The percentage of online purchase as compared to traditional purchase is increasing in this world and is carried out through the portals of the garment retailers.
The present model is designed in which a person is required to be a member of the store, s/he logs into his/her account, selects thr commodities from a large database that is tough to browse, most of the time the customer doesn't come through the products s/he is looking for. The customer then puts the order and the product is delivered.
The fundamental flaw with this system is that product discovery mechanism is not strong and the customer seems unsatisfied after the browsing resulting in a bad image of the brand and resulting in non-sales.
If by some mechanism, this experience is enhanced for the end consumer and considering these sales as not a 1 time transaction, it could increase the consumer loyalty.
Now consider a situation in which a customer is an avid shopper and does most of his shopping online, he spends a lot on his shopping and is willing to buy more products if he could find the product he is looking for.
Now the retail chain has an oppurtunity to tap the potential of this field.
Lets assume the retail chain starts collecting user shopping behavior data, analyses it and looks for a shopping pattern and customer's Thinking and his likes/dislikes towards a commodity.
Lets assume the retail chain starts collecting user shopping behavior data, analyses it and looks for a shopping pattern and customer's Thinking and his likes/dislikes towards a commodity.
An algorithm is developed by the store that could compare and find some sort of similarity between two products on the basis of type of fabric, silhoutte, colour, shade, style, fit and blah blah blah.
Now analysing the past shopping history, the store could develop a graph of customer's interest, now the next step would be integration of the recommendation system with this intrest graph.
Recommending and displaying the customer products that have a level of similarity with the past shopping history, one example could be if a customer buys trousers with narrow fit most of the times, the recommendation system could display trousers with narrow fit more than any other fit.
Now this personalised suggestion would vary from one consumer to other and would increase the probabilty of the sales.
But this system also has a flaw, if the whole shopping experience is personalised (100% personalisation), it would turn out to be a small world for the consumer with little choices and would lead to balakanisation, the personalised experience should be tailored such that it adds the external shopping enviornment, international trends, what's new in fashion and these stuff that gives a balanced experience (e.g., 50% personalised, 50% random or external).
There is one more factor that affects the shopping experience of a consumer that is his/her social graph, e.g., friends and family.
The customer asks for a suggestion from them.
The customer asks for a suggestion from them.
The system could add a social layer to it with the help of social networks. The system could be developed such that the customer could ask for feedback about a particular product of his choice from his social circle.
Friends could vote for it and comment about the style, this could in turn bring in more interest data about the person voting a product.
The personalised shopping experience would make the product discovery mechanism simplified and one fring benefit of this system would be contextual discovery from tha addition of social layer to it which would in turn boost sales.
Its all about shopping experiences and if it could be enhanced it would lead to better market value and market share for the brand.

Submissons at NIFT
Ask a NIFTian about a thing having a "Time Period" of 4-5 day?
And you are certainly gonna get the answer: SUBMISSION.
It happens every 4-5 day from the start of the semester to the end of it.
On days of submission, it is a common sight, guys running from Classroom to stationary, from Computer labs to Library.
A Chaos.
But why the hell on earth these submissions happen, because this is the System of Evaluation here.
Many a times, students are tension free, everything is done days before, they are only supposed to go to Academics area and get their assignment books signed and sometimes the situation is such that the students get so much feared about the results and its consequences on their SGPA.
BACKGROUND ANALYSIS ( Why these 2 different types of situation arises?):
1. Submission work done days before time, it happens because you are not supposed to apply brain in these assignments, it is to be copied from sources like Internet and Library books. Most of the people would be done with it ( 'most' because some guys don't move their Fingers until they are kicked in their *ss).
Some of the guys would come out with a lot of content just because they know how to mine hell lot of Data on Internet and some would come with a lot of aesthetics on their document thanks to their creativity or that of the people around him/her.
How evaluation of all these documents is done is a different subject but how much understanding has been developed is a question that even the faculties know and i think everybody agrees with me.
I don't know why we do such assignments (do you know) ?
2. submission work not complete until 4 O'clock on submission day, The assignment to be done is never clearly understood by the student, or it is continuously changed and modified by the faculty.
In this case, the student doesn't know what to do, either he is confused or he has no idea about that particular topic, this happens a lot.
He/She tries his/her best to know and understand it, finally it is deciphered by someone intelligent enough in the class, the class follow it like a flock of bird going after the Head of the flock, different trick and tips are applied, more precisely JUGAAD is done.
The class tries his/her best to complete it until the continuous modification is halted by a Bunk and finally a submission happens.
Sometimes the second problem arises because everybody is not good enough at SCAVENGER HUNT because you have to come up with such ridiculous things in your Swatch File that you would not come up with even if you go to the Remotest location on the Earth.
And you are certainly gonna get the answer: SUBMISSION.

Sincerity
After a long time, i am feeling like writing something, nothing as
such is happening in the surroundings, so there are no new updates,
everyone in the class is busy completing his/her skirts, drafting the
final pattern and all those other last moment works.
But one thing is there which differentiates our tech batch from all
others in the college is the commitment and sincerity of students
towards their studies and the focus towards the carrier.
I had been in the school and i never saw such an environment where
everyone is working and giving a neck to neck fight to each other.
During the school days, some of the intelligent brains were seen
discussing chemical reactions and physical forces and principles of
Pythagoras even during the lunch.
A bunch of students were seen wandering here and there even during
classes, bunking the class and hiding themselves from authorities and
planning to blast crackers somewhere around the campus.
A third kind of group was also there, who were somewhat in between
these two groups, they were having some sense of sincerity either
because of parents fear or because of own interest, they were a bridge
in between these groups.
The sincerity obviously returns gifts when results of exams were
announced, but it never affected the group of people to change the way
they think and the mix of people were always present.
But here at NIFT, the situation is entirely different from the school
days, my batch is the one most sincere batch and i think the faculties
in the department and our Course Coordinator also thinks the very
same.
Each and every guy is attentive towards his/her study, the attention
sheet shows no red marks and i think at this point of time if all the
students bunks all the classes they are not going to be in problem.
Everyone is complete with each and every work, no re-scheduling of
assignment dates had ever taken place, each and everyone is performing
in the class, most of the guys and girls are punctual in coming to
class, this is because of the desire of everybody to top the class and
grab the rank 1.
The commitment of this class is really to be praised.
Kudos to

semester 1 - after MID - sems
we have came from home after the Deepawali break to continue the next part of semester,
Results had came and everybody was serious after it, as most of the people were quite dissatisfied after the results but not all.
As usual the classes started, at first we all people were keen to attend the classes but now the situation was different, guys maintaining 100% attendance had come to 97%.
we were given one more project that too of 200 marks, Integrated Term Project ( ITP), we started working on our projects and assignments, slowly and steadily we got aware of the culture here, got to know what to do to get maximum marks.
We would abuse this system when we got less marks but praised the same when we got good marks.
one thing i observed was that if you have a good reputation among the faculties you get benefit during marking.
In between these days many a happening occurred, we visited Common Effluent Treatment Plant, CETP in the MIDC area, turbhe.
This visit was meant for teaching student about the water treatment techniques, but this visit become a bad memory for one of my classmates, STANLEY GEORGE, he lost his mobile in this industrial visit, can't got it till now, no one knows where the mobile went missing inside the bus.
now i was interacting with all my classmates, the one and a half month time got over and we were to face the end term exams again, same as of the first semester this time also my exams went superbly good according to me but same as that of the mid semester i was again depressed after the results.
after observing the whole class for 6 months, i come to know that it was the best combination of people of different thinking, helping, co-operative and interactive.
On the day i was going to home, we were to attend Jatin's Birthday Party at his home, would like to thank Jatin Sharma.
now for the last few days i was suffering from a major home sickness and in the train i just kept thinking when i would reach home, meet my parents and my dear friends.
